Our Story

Sometimes itʼs hard to pinpoint where a thing begins. You might say that the Kearney Church of Christ began in the middle of the last century when a handful of Christ followers gathered for fellowship and to dream about planting a church. But of course our roots run much deeper than that.

Churches of Christ originated in the Restoration Movement of the early 1800ʼs. The vision was to “restore” the New Testament style of worship, teaching and organization, using the Bible as our sole source of authority and example. 200 years later, we still find ourselves turning back to the Book and asking, “What should the church look like that Jesus dreamed He would one day build?” We donʼt see ourselves as THE answer to that question, but as a part of the answer. We stand on the shoulders of great men and women who have gone before us, and we hope to leave a godly legacy for the next generation of believers.

You may hear us refer to the Church of Christ as an “Acts 2 church.” For us, that means getting back to the basics of simple faith that were so clearly evident in the lives of first century Christians. When Jesus was asked about what was most important His answer was not complicated. “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, mind, soul and strength.” And, “Love your neighbor as yourself.” And that has become the standard by which we measure our success. Over the past few decades, courageous leaders, gifted teachers and devoted followers have worked together at the Kearney Church of Christ to build a community of faith where our love for God and others fuels everything we do.

People who are seeking a relationship with God have found this to be a safe environment where they can learn and grow and encounter truth and love in action.  They become hope-filled. They experience remarkable love and acceptance. And they re-discover life.
